چکیده

Despite recent studies on bio-fuels for carbon mitigation, biomass resource shortages in Japan continue to be a serious concern. To deal with this future problem, we evaluated whether the large amounts of biomass supplied from arid land afforestation in Western Australia could compensate for this biomass resource shortage, by estimating how much biomass as bio-fuel resource could be produced by this type of afforestation using arid areas. First, from ground truthing with tree measurement and allometirc equations, biomass production potential for bio-fuel resource was estimated at 70.5 Mg ha-1 in 30 years. Second, from remote sensing analysis (vegetation classification and biomass estimation), afforestation candidate areas with scarce natural vegetation were estimated at 5.41×104 ha. At the same time, the amount of potential biomass to be obtained from natural vegetation when creating afforestation areas was estimated at 6.47×104 Mg. Third, biomass production potential for bio-fuel by afforestation in arid areas of Murchison region was estimated at 3.37×108 Mg using the above estimated data and vegetation maps created from the Australian native vegetation assessment 2001 by the national land and water resources audit. From Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), assuming the use of this estimated biomass as bio-ethanol, bio-fuel production potential was estimated at about 1.07×108 m3 in 30 years (3.56×106 m3 year-1). Thus, our study suggests that there is a large potential for biomass production for bio-fuel using this approach.

Evaluation of Carbon Sequestration Amount and Baseline Using Satellite Imagery in Arid Land

As a countermeasure to the greenhouse effect, afforestation in arid areas has been proposed and tested in an arid area of Western Australia. According to the CDM/JI guidelines set by UNFCCC, the sequestrated carbon amount accountable as carbon credit was estimated in this study. First, the sequestrated carbon amount by planted trees was measured by repeated tree censuses. Second, the land use t...

Estimation of Browse Productivity for Acacia seyal (Delile) in Alazzazah Area, Blue Nile State, Sudan

Fodder trees and shrubs are crucial sources of animal feed in Sudan, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas. This is because they can fill up the feed gaps in the summer period when grassland growth is limited due to unfavorable weather conditions. The study was conducted in Elnour forest-southeastern Sudan in 2015, which is dominated by Acacia seyal. The objectives of this study were to esti...

Carbon sequestration potential in soil and stand of Nitraria schoberi L.

Arid and semi-arid lands cover around one-third of the world's terrestrial expanse and their widespread plantdistributions provide these areas with a high potential for sequestering carbon. Vegetation management for developingshrub or tree species in arid and semi-arid regions is one inexpensive and multi-purpose approach for decreasing CO2.This study assessed the potential of carbon sequestrat...

Determination of suitable areas for reforestation and afforestation with indigenous species

To be successful in tree establishment, an assessment of land suitability would be necessary. The aim of this study was determining the potential habitats of three native tree species (Quercus persica, Pistacia atlantica, Amygdalous scoparia) in Siahkoh region of Ilam County, using Boolean method and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). For this regard, the slope, aspect and hypsometric maps o...
